P  S  A  L .   X  V  I  I  I   (18)

To him that excelleth. A Psalme of David the servaunt of the Lord, which spake unto the Lord the wordes of this song (in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of al his enemies, and from the hand of Saul) and said,

I Will love thee dearely, O Lorde my strength.
The Lord is my rocke, and my fortresse, and hee that delivereth mee, my God and my strength: in him will I trust, my shield, the horne also of my salvation, and my refuge.
I will call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised: so shal I be safe from mine enemies.
The sorowes of death compassed me, and the floods of wickednesse made mee afraid.
The sorowes of the grave have compassed me about: the snares of death overtooke mee.
But in my trouble did I call upon the Lord, and cryed unto my God: he heard my voyce out of his Temple, & my cry did come before him, even into his eares.
Then the earth trembled, and quaked: the foundations also of the mountaines mooved and shooke, because he was angry.
Smoke went out at his nostrels, and a consuming fire out of his mouth: coales were kindled thereat.
Hee bowed the heavens also and came downe, and darkenesse was under his feete.
And hee rode upon Cherub and did flie, and hee came flying upon the wings of the winde.
Hee made darknesse his secret place, and his pavilion round about him, even darknesse of waters, and cloudes of the ayre.
At the brightnesse of his presence his cloudes passed, hailestones and coales of fire.
The Lord also thundred in the heaven, and the Highest gave his voyce, hailestones and coales of fire.
Then hee sent out his arrowes and scattered them, and he increased lightnings and destroyed them.
And the chanels of waters were seene, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuking, O Lord, at the blasting of the breath of thy nostrels.
He hath sent downe from above, and taken me: he hath drawen me out of many waters.
He hath delivered me from my strong enemie, and from them which hate mee: for they were too strong for me.
They prevented mee in the day of my calamitie: but the Lord was my stay.
He brought me forth also into a large place, he delivered me because he favoured mee.
The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousnesse: according to the purenesse of mine hands he recompensed mee.
Because I kept the wayes of the Lord, and did not wickedly against my God.
For all his lawes were before me, and I did not cast away his commaundements from me.
I was upright also with him, & have kept me from my wickednes.
Therefore the Lord rewarded me according to my righteousnesse, & according to the purenesse of mine hands in his sight.
With the godly thou wilt shew thy self godly: with the upright man thou wilt shew thy selfe upright.
With the pure thou wilt shew thy selfe pure, and with the froward thou wilt shew thy selfe froward.
Thus thou wilt save the poore people, and wilt cast downe the proud lookes.
Surely thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God wil lighten my darknesse.
For by thee I have broken through an hoste, and by my God I have leaped over a wall.
The way of God is incorrupt: the word of the Lord is tryed in the fire: he is a shield to all that trust in him.
For who is God besides the Lord? and who is mighty save our God?
God girdeth mee with strength, and maketh my way upright.
He maketh my feete like Hindes feete, and setteth me upon mine high places.
He teacheth mine hands to fight: so that a bowl of brasse is broken with mine armes.
Thou hast also given mee the shield of thy salvation, and thy right hand hath stayed mee, and thy loving kindnesse hath caused me to increase.
Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, and mine heeles have not slid.
I have pursued mine enemies, and taken them, and have not turned againe till I had consumed them.
I have wounded them, that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.
For thou hast girded me with strength to battell: them that rose against me, thou hast subdued under me.
And thou hast given mee the neckes of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
They cryed, but there was none to save them, even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.
Then I did beate them small as the dust before the winde: I did tread them flat as the clay in the streetes.
Thou hast delivered me from the contentions of the people: thou hast made mee the head of the heathen: a people, whom I have not knowen, shall serve me.
Assoon as they heare, they shall obey mee: the stranger shall be in subjection to mee.
Strangers shall shrinke away, and feare in their privie chambers.
Let the Lord live, and blessed bee my strength, and the God of my salvation be exalted.
It is God that giveth me power to avenge me, & subdueth the people under me.
O my deliverer from mine enemies, even thou hast set me up from them that rose against me: thou hast delivered me from the cruel man.
Therefore I will praise thee, O Lord, among the nations, and will sing unto thy Name.
Great deliverances giveth he unto his King, and sheweth mercy to his anoynted, even to David, and to his seed for ever.
